Ingredients

Guinea hen weed (leaves, root, or stalk): a handful, or 7 leaves

Water: enough to cover in a small pot

Step-by-Step

Harvest or obtain the guinea hen weed (leaves, root, or a full stalk can be used).

Add the plant material to a pot of water.

Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for several minutes.

Strain, let cool, and sweeten if desired.

Serve hot or chilled.

Tips

For topical use, crush fresh leaves into a paste and apply directly to areas of joint or muscle pain.

The plant has a very strong, garlic-like smell — this is normal and considered a sign of its potency in the tradition.

As with other strong bush medicines, this is traditionally used as a short course rather than an everyday drink.
