Ingredients

Green or red cabbage leaves: several, enough to cover the area

A rolling pin or similar (optional)

Step-by-Step

Separate several cabbage leaves and wash them.

Chill the leaves in the refrigerator or freezer for a few minutes (or use them at room temperature, depending on preference).

Bruise the leaves lightly with a rolling pin, or cut out the thick central vein, so they mold more easily to the body.

Place the leaves directly over the affected area (joint, swollen breast, or area of localized swelling).

Hold in place with a snug (not tight) garment or wrap.

Leave in place for 20 to 30 minutes, then remove and discard the leaves.

Repeat 2 to 3 times a day as needed.

Tips

For breast engorgement specifically, some healers recommend cutting a hole for the nipple to keep it dry.

Both chilled and room-temperature leaves have been found effective — use whichever feels more soothing.

If using for mastitis (a possible infection, not just engorgement), see a doctor, since antibiotics may be needed alongside any comfort measure.
